We recently spoke with Mikael Schultz – Head of BI & Business Transformation at Lauritzen Bulkers to discuss how our partnership has helped their teams.
You can watch all the interviews with Mikael below.
“Having a tool that provides insightful data on each of your port calls will enable you to see risk where it is.”
Mikael joins PortLog’s SVP, Product, Kim Ahler, to summarise the benefits of PortLog Pro for chartering teams.
Mikael explains how PortLog have helped solve their unpaid time challenge.
He also shares how he envisions estimating time in port in new and improved ways with PortLog, compared to their traditional ways.
Kim: One factor to consider is the time you’re spending at sea, and the other is the time you spend in a port. Of course, every day has a cost. People think demurrage covers them, but that’s not always true. How has Lauritzen Bulkers traditionally estimated the time they would be spending in port, and how do you see opportunities for doing that in new ways?
Mikael: It’s a conservative industry. Historically, we’ve been doing what we’ve been doing for at least 30 years, based on charterparty terms that are not easily changed and considering factors that will allow extra time in our estimates.
The perception of factoring in a little extra allowance for our estimate of events that will fall upon us as owners or operators is tough to beat. But data that we see now due to PortLog Pro means that we can actually have a meaningful conversation with our chartering staff and say, “The old way of doing business doesn’t really work as well as doing it based on data, or even preferably a combination of data and knowledge.”
After partnering with PortLog for several years, Lauritzen Bulkers have recently upgraded to our PortLog Pro platform.
Mikael explains the difference between the two versions and how the newest solution helps their chartering teams to improve efficiency.

Mikael shares how PortLog has helped them improve cost estimation accuracy and why this is important for their voyage P&Ls.
